Airplanes fly using the principle of lift, which is generated by the wings that have a special shape called an airfoil. When air moves over the wings, it creates a difference in air pressure, with lower pressure on top and higher pressure below. This pressure difference creates an upward force known as lift, allowing the airplane to stay airborne.

Airplanes are powered by engines, which may be jet engines or propellers. Jet engines produce thrust by expelling high-speed exhaust gases, while propellers generate thrust by rotating and pushing air backward. The speed of airplanes varies depending on their type. Commercial jetliners can typically reach speeds between 500 and 600 miles per hour (800-965 kilometers per hour), while supersonic aircraft like the Concorde could travel at over twice the speed of sound (around 1,350 mph or 2,180 km/h). Military aircraft and experimental planes can achieve even higher speeds.

Most airplanes rely on aviation fuel, also known as jet fuel or aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which is specifically designed for aircraft engines. This fuel is often derived from petroleum and refined to meet the requirements of high-performance jet engines. Some smaller aircraft may use different types of fuels, such as aviation gasoline (avgas) or turboprop fuel.

Airplanes navigate using a combination of techniques and systems. They rely on instruments like altimeters, airspeed indicators, compasses, and navigation systems such as GPS (Global Positioning System). Pilots also use radio communication with air traffic control to receive instructions and navigate along predetermined airways or routes.

During landing, airplanes are guided by a combination of visual cues, instrument readings, and assistance from air traffic control. Pilots follow a designated glide slope provided by ground-based systems such as Instrument Landing System (ILS) or use advanced navigation tools like GPS. Additionally, pilots visually align the aircraft with the runway using runway lights and markers before touching down.

If an airplane loses an engine, it is designed to continue flying safely on the remaining engines. Twin-engine airplanes, for example, can sustain flight with just one functioning engine. Pilots are trained to handle such situations through specific procedures and may need to adjust the aircraft's speed, altitude, and flight path to maintain safe control and landing.

Airplanes are designed to handle turbulent weather to ensure passenger safety and comfort. They have sturdy structures and strong wings capable of withstanding moderate turbulence. Pilots can also rely on weather radar systems to detect severe weather conditions and adjust the aircraft's course to avoid turbulent areas whenever possible.
